Ex-Spurs man praises Levy for the way he managed Tanguy Ndombele situation

Paul Robinson has praised Daniel Levy for the way in which he managed Tanguy Ndombele after the midfielder admitted the Spurs chairman was one of the reasons he decided against leaving the club.

Ndombele has shown glimpses of great quality in the two and a half years since Spurs broke their transfer record to sign him from Lyon but the Frenchman has not quite been able to deliver on a consistent basis as of yet.

He has come close to departing Tottenham on a couple of occasions, including this summer after reportedly informing the club that he wanted to leave.

However, the 24-year-old has since established himself as a regular in the starting eleven and Spurs fans will be hoping that this is finally the season where the midfielder hits the heights that are expected of him, although he will now have to do so under a new manager.

Speaking to The Telegraph last week, Ndombele opened up on his meeting with Daniel Levy during his first season at the club, which Spurs fans caught a glimpse of in Amazon Prime’s All or Northing documentary.

The French international declared that the meeting was one of the reasons he is still at N17 today.

Reacting to Ndombele’s admission, Robinson has said that the midfielder needed to be managed differently from other players, insisting there is a lot more to come from him.

Speaking before Nuno’s sacking, the former Spurs number one told Football Insider: “Ndombele is a different type of player to a lot of others off the field.

“He needs to be man-managed in a different way to get the best out of him.

“Daniel Levy deserves credit for the way he identified the issue and spoke directly to him about it.

“We’ve seen flashes from him, he’s been frustrating since signing because he can’t do it week-in, week-out.

“He’s a player that the manager should be getting a lot more out of but there are encouraging signs.

“He has played him the most of any manager who has had him at Spurs, and he’s played his best football under Nuno.

“He’s a top-quality player but there’s so much more to get out of him.”

It was fairly evident that Mourinho wanted Ndombele sold in the summer of 2020 but Levy did not appear too keen, particularly since the club would not be able to recoup the money they paid for him.

One has to give the Spurs chairman credit for his tough stance as there are now some promising signs that this could be the 24-year-old’s breakout season.
