Tottenham Hotspur opened its doors for the first two NFL matches at the new stadium this week, while a number of the players were away on international duty.
The new Spurs stadium was specifically designed for these games in mind, with a second NFL pitch lying underneath the retractable Tottenham turf.
This ensures that the club can hold events such as these to generate extra buzz and income without damaging the Tottenham pitch or having an impact on the Spurs team.
One man who has been left impressed by both the stadium and the decision from Daniel Levy to make the ground so multi-purpose is ex-player and coach Clive Allen.
Allen, who was actually a kicker for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe after his footballing career, claims that the stadium is amazing for the American sport.
He also added that the extra income without affecting Tottenham’s football is the way forward and something Levy should take credit for.
Allen said (Football London): “I think it’s absolutely amazing. I was at the Bears-Raiders game, the first one and the atmosphere was amazing. There were a lot of Americans in London watching the game, I was among them and they couldn’t quite believe how the stadium worked. They thought it fitted perfectly.
“Obviously I’ve experienced the Premier League and Champions League games that have been played there and we know the atmosphere is amazing, but for American Football it fits perfectly.
“I see a Spurs London NFL franchise in the next few years. It’s moving towards that and the way the whole stadium has been developed it’s a perfect fit.
“It’s all income. It’s not going to affect our football, our Premier League football and the Spurs supporters watching football.
“Why not? It’s a multi-purpose stadium. It won’t just be NFL, there will be concerts and other events, other sporting events as well. That’s the way forward. The attention to detail is absolutely amazing and Daniel has been at the head of that.
“It’s been his passion for a number of years and he has to take enormous credit for that.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I could not agree more. The new stadium not only creates the perfect venue for an amazing Spurs atmosphere, but the extra income opportunities are endless. NFL, boxing, and concerts are just the tip of the iceberg. Genius from Levy and his team.
