Ex-Spurs player and coach was ‘disappointed’ when Kane failed to seal Man City move

Gus Poyet has admitted he was ‘disappointed’ when Harry Kane failed to secure a transfer from Tottenham to Manchester City last summer.

Kane was linked with a move to the Premier League champions after allegedly telling Spurs of his intentions to leave the club at the end of last season (Sky Sports).

Pep Guardiola confirmed his side’s interest in the England captain (The Guardian), which led to City fronting a bid worth around £125 million late in the window (Fabrizio Romano).

However, the bid was turned down by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who was intent on keeping his prized asset on board in North London.

But Kane remaining at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium seemingly saddened former Spurs midfielder Poyet, who labelled it a ‘disappointing’ outcome.

Poyet told Betting Expert, via the Express: “I thought Harry Kane was leaving last summer, I was convinced.

“When he didn’t, from a football side, I was a little bit disappointed because he made a strong call and then he stayed. I don’t know how they convinced him, but we’ll see in the summer again.

“If we look at Kyle Walker, he went to Man City to win and he’s won [several trophies since leaving Tottenham]. He’s the player he is because he’s at Man City.”

Kane is contracted at Spurs until the summer of 2024, but his future is still seemingly up in the air with BILD reporting that Manchester United have become the latest club interested in the 28-year-old.

Spurs will likely have to fend off clubs again for Kane this summer – especially if they conclude the season poorly. But for clubs interested in him, they will have to front up the cash regardless as he is still worth more to Spurs than any of them.
