Ex-Spurs star believes this Tottenham academy graduate should start for England

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has likened Harry Winks to Ex-Spurs and Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick. He believes that Winks can become an important player for both Spurs and England, like Carrick.

O’Hara told TalkSport, as quoted by Football.London: “For me, Harry Winks should be playing in this England team. He had a great game for Spurs in the north London derby against Arsenal.”

“For me, he reminds me of Michael Carrick. I would play Winks in front of the back four, sitting in front, and play him alongside [James] Maddison and [Mason] Mount, because they can be the future of England.

“He [Winks] is definitely something England have been looking for. I think he has got a bit more to his game than Declan Rice. He has got something special about him, and I believe with a bit more experience, he can be our best midfielder.”

Winks can be a divisive player for football fans but clearly has the potential to be an important player for the national team going forward, especially because central midfield is one of the few areas without any real stand out top-class prospects for England.

Like Winks, Carrick was also quite divisive amongst fans because both players lack the flair and excitement of someone like Tanguy Ndombele. However, Winks’ work-rate and determination are top class and he boasts a much better passing range than he is often given credit for.

Winks has all the potential to be one of Tottenham’s best midfielders for years to come. If he can stay injury-free then he should be able to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans for the future.
