Ex-Spurs star reveals he has held talks with the club over potential coaching role

Jermain Defoe has revealed he has been in conversation with Tottenham about a potential coaching role in the club’s academy, as per Dan Kilpatrick.

Defoe, who called time on a 22-year playing career in March, enjoyed a productive part of his playing days at Spurs across two separate spells.

The former England international scored 143 goals for the club between 2004 and 2014 which is enough to place him sixth on the all-time list of goalscorers (Tottenham).

With more time on his hands, Defoe’s focus will likely shift into continuing his career in football as a coach.

The Daily Mail recently reported that Defoe is currently working towards his coaching badges and former employers Tottenham had ‘opened the door’ for him to complete his qualifications at the club’s Enfield training centre.

And the 39-year-old has now confirmed that he has been in talks with Spurs about a potential position in the academy while being presented as a half-time guest during their 1-0 win over Burnley.

Defoe was very much a fan favourite having scored plenty of quality goals over the years and no doubt he would be a welcomed addition to the academy if he is offered a role.

He could bring some very good insight to the players using his experience, particularly to the young forwards at the club who would gain tips from one of England’s best natural strikers of the ball.
