Ex-Spurs striker hopes Arsenal-linked player remains in Spain

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Freddie Kanoute has urged Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey to snub a move away and stay put in Madrid.

Partey came through the academy set up at Atletico and has made 174 first-team appearances, where he has scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists (transfermarket).

Although the Ghanian international primarily operates as a defensive midfielder and specialises in shielding the back four, he is quite versatile and also capable of playing a more box to box role.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old in the past, with Guillem Balague recently revealing that the Lilywhites had once inquired about the midfielder’s availability.

However, it is Arsenal who have been backed to land him this summer with reports suggesting the Gunners have a €50million on the table for Partey and the midfielder is ‘one step away’ from completing a move to the Emirates stadium (Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness).

However, Kanoute believes the Atletico star should stay in La Liga rather than moving to the Premier League.

The former Spurs striker told Goal.com: “There are a few exciting [African] players in La Liga in my opinion.

“He’s (Partry) a player who is going to keep improving, and there have even been rumours of him leaving to other clubs.

“We hope to keep him in LaLiga as long as possible.”

As much as I would hate to admit it, Partey would be a solid acquisition for Arsenal and a considerable improvement over both Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. However, I would still prefer Spurs to sign Hojbjerg over the Ghanian, particularly considering Atleti’s steep asking price.
