Ex-Spurs striker reveals what Newcastle must do to convince Pochettino to join

Former Tottenham striker, Dimitar Berbatov, believes that Newcastle United need to convince Mauricio Pochettino that they are ready to spend big on top players in order to get the former Spurs boss to join.

A £300 million takeover of Newcastle United is said to be edging closer after Amanda Staveley’s PCP Partners and the Saudi Public Investment Fund reportedly agreed to buy the club from Mike Ashley (Telegraph).

It is revealed that the new owners are on the lookout for a manager and that Pochettino is said to be one of the names on their shortlist (Eurosport France journalist, Manu Lonjon).

Football Insider reported that the former Spurs boss is ready to talk with the Magpies and analyse their proposal.

Berbatov believes it will be a huge coup for Newcastle if they manage to land Pochettino as the Argentine will be able to attract the big names like former Spurs star Gareth Bale.

Speaking to Betfair (as relayed by the Daily Mail), the striker said: “If the rumours are true, and Newcastle are looking at appointing Mauricio Pochettino, it would be a great move for the team.

“If he goes there then it will be the first sign from the new owners, to the players they are targeting, that the club means business.

“If you put Pochettino in charge at Newcastle and you go and speak to players, trust me they will pay more attention and take the offer seriously, and I’m talking about big players as well.

“I know Gareth Bale is among those who have been linked with the club. I’m sure Newcastle will want to rebuild with some top names.”

However, the Bulgarian insisted that Newcastle’s new owners have to promise the 47-year-old considerable funds in order to convince him to take the job.

He added: “If the rumours are true, the first thing Pochettino is going to want is a guarantee that they will buy players because he would like to have as many good players as possible at his disposal so that he can achieve the club’s goals.

“He has already made his name as one of the best coaches in the world. The question is, does Pochettino actually want to go to Newcastle? When you are connected to names like Real Madrid and Manchester United – and I mean no disrespect to Newcastle – there is a bit of a difference there.

“The biggest factor that would persuade Pochettino to go to St James’ Park would be having the funds to buy players.”

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Pochettino is the best option that Newcastle can get as he has proven with his work at Southampton and Spurs that he can get teams to punch above their weight. However, I am not sure that this project is for Pochettino as he hasn’t had too much success in the transfer market either at Southampton or Tottenham. I believe that Pochettino will want his next project to be one where he can challenge for major honours, and it is going to take Newcastle at least two or three years to reach that level.
