Ex-Tottenham boss heaps praise on ‘maverick’ star who ‘will punish you’ if allowed

Tim Sherwood has praised Tanguy Ndombele for his goal and overall display during Tottenham’s win against Newcastle United.

The Frenchman tallied in the first-half at St James’ Park to help guide Tottenham to a 3-2 victory, making the perfect return to Premier League action.

Newcastle, playing in their first fixture under their new Saudi-led ownership, were ahead after just two minutes through a Callum Wilson header, but saw themselves surrender goals to Ndombele, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son before half-time.

Ndombele’s 17th-minute equaliser saw him drive the ball past a helpless Karl Darlow from the edge of the box, which was just the start of a stellar midfield performance in Tyneside.

The finish impressed former Spurs boss Sherwood, who praised Ndombele for the role he played in getting Nuno Espirito Santo’s side back on level terms.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, he said: “The first Spurs goal is well worked. The ball goes out to Reguilon on the left, and you just can’t leave Ndombele in that kind of space. He is a maverick, and he will punish you in those situations.”

Ndombele’s equalising goal was just the start of a commanding display against Newcastle. He proved to be a constant thorn in Steve Bruce’s side all evening, which was yet another sign of just how much he can offer this Spurs team when he is on song.
