Ex-Tottenham manager predicts that first-team duo will move to China in 2020

Tottenham Hotspur fans were forced to wave goodbye to one of their favourite players back in January when Mousa Dembele made the move to China.

However, with the midfielder’s contract ending in the summer, Tottenham had to either sell up or lose him on a free.

The club ended up getting a decent £11m fee for the Belgian (BBC), but could this pave the way for some similar moves in 2020?

Both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are into the final year of their respective contracts, meaning that, as it stands, they would be leaving on frees in the summer of 2020.

So, could Tottenham look to move them on in January as they did with Dembele? Or will they attempt to sign them up to new contracts?

Ex-Spurs boss, Tim Sherwood, believes that the pair have just one move left in them now that they are over 30-years-old and they could use this chance to move to China too.

He said (Sky Sports The Debate – 03/09/2019): “Alderweireld looks like he’s going to move and at 30 years of age, and Vertonghen at 32, it’s probably the last time they are going to fill the till up.

“It’s a short career they need to do that, perhaps [they could move to] China. Chinese clubs don’t take defenders very often, but they are probably waiting for that big one to come.”
