Ex-Tottenham star could receive Champions League medal despite no-longer being at the club

Tottenham Hotspur have had a number of heroes in the Champions League who deserve medals this season after an unlikely run to the final.

Lucas Moura, not only with a late goal away to Barcelona that sealed knock-out qualification, but a hat-trick in the semi-final to drag Spurs past Ajax.

Heung Min Son for his incredible displays against Borussia Dortmund, and goals in the absence of Harry Kane.

Jan Vertonghen for his man of the match game at home to Dortmund in the last 16.

Fernando Llorente for his late goal at Manchester City. Kane for his goals. Lloris for his saves. Danny Rose for the energy and passion. Toby for his defence. Winks and Sissoko for their strength and desire in the engine room.

Each and every Tottenham star deserves a gold medal around their necks, but could an ex-player be in line to get one too?

Mousa Dembele transferred away in January, but he did start Tottenham’s first two matches in the group stage, before picking up an injury.

UEFA regulations say that Spurs will either get 40 winners medals or 40 runners-up medals to dish out to players and staff.

Spurs will, therefore, have the chance to hand one to Mousa for his contributions, if they so desire, as they have not used 40 players in the competition.

Back in 2015, Thomas Vermaelen had the chance to scoop a winners medal despite having not played for Barcelona at all in the competition (Daily Mail).

Mousa Dembele tweeted his congratulations to the Tottenham team this morning.
