Pascal Chimbonda tells Tottenham who they need to invest heavily in this summer

Amidst all the transfer speculation ahead of the summer transfer window, former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has exclusively told us where he believes the club must strengthen.

Tottenham Hotspur’s 2024/25 campaign has been nothing short of disastrous. With the club already out of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup and sitting 14th in the Premier League, there’s little left to play for beyond pride.

As a result, focus is now shifting to next season, with people naturally discussing how the Lilywhites can rebuild for a stronger campaign.

Transfer rumours are already swirling, linking Spurs with several potential signings. Recent reports have revealed Spurs’s transfer priority ahead of the next transfer window.

However, former Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda has exclusively told Spurs Web where he believes the club should prioritise their business this summer.

Pascal Chimbonda wants Spurs to prioritise defensive midfield reinforcements

The ex-Spurs defender has made it clear that, in his opinion, Tottenham must sign a defensive midfielder—someone capable of shielding the back four. Speaking to Spurs Web, he said:

“I would love Spurs to sign a top midfielder this summer because we need someone to protect the back four. I think we are good on the attacking side of things, and I don’t think many strikers are available on the market at the moment anyway.”

Given Yves Bissouma’s struggles this season, plenty of Spurs fans will likely share Chimbonda’s concerns.

The Malian has looked a shadow of the player who dominated midfield battles last season, and Bissouma’s recent performances have left Tottenham supporters frustrated.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer midfield targets

Of course, over the last few months, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with several midfielders who fit the profile of a defensive six.

One notable name is Johnny Cardoso, a player Spurs have a £21 million purchase clause for, following their deal with Real Betis after Giovani Lo Celso’s move to the Spanish club. We’ve even compared Cardoso’s stats with Bissouma’s to see how the two stack up.

Another name frequently mentioned is Adam Wharton, who would also be a strong addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side. If Spurs can secure a deal for him, he could offer much-needed stability in the middle of the park.

For now, all eyes are on Johan Lange and the recruitment team ahead of what promises to be a crucial summer transfer window for Spurs.
