Exclusive: Spurs ‘need to deliver’ – Stephen Carr explains how Postecoglou can win trophies

It has been 14 years since Tottenham Hotspur last won a trophy, but Stephen Carr believes Ange Postecoglou can change that. In an exclusive interview with The Spurs Web, Carr explained what the Tottenham manager needs to make that happen.

Since winning the League Cup in 2008, Spurs have been close to winning silverware on a couple of occasions — the Champions League final in 2019 being the most prominent opportunity.

The Lilywhites have even finished second in the Premier League twice in recent years, but still, the wait goes on.

However, with Ange Postecoglou at the helm and hungry to bring success to the club, many fans and pundits now believe Tottenham’s time will come.

Can Spurs win a trophy under Ange Postecoglou?

One man who knows a thing or two about winning silverware with Spurs is Stephen Carr, who won the League Cup in 1999. Carr spoke exclusively to The Spurs Web, thanks to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds, to discuss the chances of Postecoglou ending the trophy drought.

He said: “Spurs have a great opportunity under Postecoglou to win trophies, but they did under Mauricio Pochettino and things didn’t work out. But I think he’s the right man because they’ve been fantastic to watch at times, but he does need more depth.

“They obviously lost Harry Kane which has been a huge loss, although Richarlison has done well, as has James Maddison in midfield, but it’s hard. Competing with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool is hard but if they get the right players in the summer then I think it’s something they can do.

“Winning trophies isn’t easy but look at what Coventry have done in the FA Cup, but this season the goal will be to qualify for the Champions League. Being in the Champions League is a massive thing for Spurs and it helps attract the players they need to improve, if I was a player I’d see that they have massive selling points.”

Carr had a warning for Spurs, though, adding: “The stadium is outrageous and the training ground is like a five-star luxury hotel – now they need to deliver because all that is well and good but if you aren’t winning anything then fans will get restless.”
