Experienced star admits to feeling rusty after not playing for last 10 months at Spurs

Hugo Lloris has said that he was not overly pleased with his debut for Los Angeles FC, admitting that he is still a little rusty, having not played any competitive football for ten months.

Lloris made his debut for the Major League Soccer side in their season opener against Seattle Sounders, with the Californian side emerging 2-1 winners, courtesy of goals either side of half-time.

The Frenchman had not featured since Tottenham’s 6-1 loss to Newcastle United back in April of last year and he admitted in a recent interview with The Athletic that he had found it quite difficult over the last six months at Tottenham, being used to playing regularly since the early years of his career.

LA head coach Steve Cherundolo was quite happy with the World Cup winner’s performance on Sunday and insisted that the goalkeeper brought calmness to his side’s backline.

Hugo Lloris is finally back out on the pitch

He said about the 37-year-old (via Football.London): “He has a calmness to him, doesn’t feel pressured, has real-time answers for the guys and input. He gives our back line and entire team a sense of security, which we’ve had over the past couple of years, but in my opinion a little more now.”

However, the former Tottenham captain was not particularly positive about his own display, remarking that he is still learning to play with his new teammates and working his way up to match sharpness.

Lloris said about his debut: “To be honest, I was not really happy with my distribution today because we walked through things in training, but when we were on the field today, there was a lot of misunderstanding between us. That’s normal though. We are still in a process of getting to know each other but I feel good.

“I know that physically I’m not 100% yet. I know I also need to get the rhythm of the competition because it’s been 10 months now in which I haven’t played, but today I had a good feeling, even if everything was not perfect. I stayed calm and tried to lead the back four but they were brilliant. In every important moment of the game we were strong and that is something we can build on.”

Some rustiness was always going to be there, given that Lloris had not played any football for almost a year. I have no doubt that the former Tottenham man will save a lot of points for LAFC over the course of the season.
