Expert claims Spurs star may have made injury worse by playing through it

Ben Dinnery suggests that Tottenham Hotspur star Dejan Kulusevski may have made his current injury worse by deciding to play on during the recent international break.

Kulusevski arrived at Tottenham in January and has been a key player since. He contributed five goals and eight assists last season (Transfermarkt) as Spurs secured a top-four finish.

This campaign has proven a little more difficult for Kulusevski, who had found himself dropped from the starting line-up for three games. The attacker still has one goal and three assists this season (Transfermarkt).

Kulusevski injured himself on international duty for Sweden recently, and The Daily Mail reported that he could be out for at least two weeks with the muscle injury.

He missed the North London derby last weekend and the Champions League tie with Frankfurt in midweek. Kulusevski is also set to miss the Premier League tie with Brighton this weekend.

Now, it has been revealed that Kulusevski’s decision to play through the injury could have made things worse, according to Ben Dinnery of Premier Injuries.

Kulusevski reportedly complained of tightness in his thigh during the international break, but played through and missed just five minutes of action in the doubleheader against Serbia and Slovenia.

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery said: “I understand that they wanted to send the player for a second MRI scan.”

“Initial suggestions were that it wasn’t too serious. I think the problem may have been exacerbated by the fact that he stayed on for Sweden and then complained about some discomfort post-match,” he added.

“I think mid-October is where we are likely to be on this one. However, it may be that he needs more imaging to confirm exactly where we are. Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious,” Dinnery concluded.

Spurs Web Opinion

We have really missed Dejan Kulusevski these last couple of games, and the thought of being without him for even longer is not something that bears thinking about. Luckily, we strengthened the squad over the summer so the likes of Richarlison can come in and support through this difficult period.
