Expert explains why Tottenham might not be able to sack Fabio Paratici now

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has explained that Tottenham Hotspur have to be extremely cautious if they wish to terminate Fabio Paratici’s contract as they might otherwise find themselves in legal trouble.

Last week, FIFA decided to extend Paratici’s Italian suspension for alleged financial irregularities while at Juventus into a worldwide ban, with the FIFA disciplinary committee’s decision seemingly catching Spurs off guard.

That left Tottenham little choice but to temporarily part ways with the 50-year-old, with the club confirming that he had taken an immediate leave of absence pending the outcome of his appeal, which will be heard on April 19.

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (01/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) reported a few days ago that Daniel Levy ‘still believes’ in the Italian and the work he has done at the club so far, which is why the Tottenham chairman is prepared to wait until the appeal to make a decision on his future.

Maguire has now explained that Spurs would have to prove gross misconduct if they plan on sacking Paratici.

He told Football Insider: “Unless Tottenham can prove gross misconduct, then they have to be careful as to what grounds they can use to terminate Paratici’s contract.

“Spurs were aware of the issues in Italy months ago and chose not to take any action. They will be addressing their lawyers, but Paratici will be too and a legal battle seems inevitable.

“It is important to remember he is innocent until proven guilty, and therefore he will be in a position to defend himself. So if Tottenham did decide to sack him, they need to act with extreme caution.”

Levy’s unwillingness to get entangled in a legal battle might be part of the reason why he has not already pulled the plug on Paratici.

Spurs will, of course, have no choice but to part ways with the Italian if his appeal is unsuccessful.

However, if the ban is overturned, it appears as if he would continue at the club.
