Fabrizio Romano claims Spurs are ‘not in the race’ for 28-year-old defender

Fabrizio Romano has ruled Tottenham Hotspur out of the race for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger has been a vital component of Chelsea’s defensive improvements under Thomas Tuchel but the centre-back is now approaching the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Over recent months, Spurs have been linked with a move for the German international. Gianluca Di Marzio claimed last month that Tottenham were one of four clubs in talks with the German international over a summer move.

Journalist Dean Jones then said on The Done Deal Show (starting at 36:02) that one of the biggest offers on the table for the former Roma man was from Spurs.

According to The Daily Mail, some of Europe’s biggest clubs including Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all watching Rudiger’s situation at Chelsea.

Romano has now revealed that Rudiger is still far from reaching an agreement with the Blues over a new contract.

The journalist stated that Spurs are not in the race for the centre-back and hinted that Real Madrid are the front-runners for the 28-year-old’s signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

I never thought Rudiger was a realistic target for Spurs as not only are we unlikely to meet his rumoured demands of a £400,000-per-week deal but the German would also not want to tarnish his Chelsea legacy by joining Spurs.

Andreas Christensen, whose contract at Chelsea also runs out at the end of the season, would be a much more realistic target for Spurs and the Dane would be a good fit for Conte’s back three.
