Fabrizio Romano claims Spurs have now ‘opened talks’ to sign new defender

Speculation is growing by the day when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Jean-Clair Todibo, and now Fabrizio Romano has claimed the North London side have now opened talks to sign the Frenchman.

Adding a new centre-back to Ange Postecoglou‘s squad is expected to be the top priority in the January transfer window for Spurs (Telegraph).

The hamstring injury to summer signing Micky van de Ven has exposed the lack of depth in that area for Postecoglou, and the manager himself has admitted he is on ‘tenterhooks’ in case any other players pick up a knock (Football.London).

Recently, Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for Jean-Clair Todibo. The Nice defender is thought to be on the radar of both Newcastle United and Manchester United, too, but it is Spurs who had reportedly set up ‘further talks’ with the player’s representatives (Daily Mail).

Spurs stepping up in chase for Todibo

Now, Fabrizio Romano has a fresh update on the ongoing situation this afternoon, and it seems Spurs are stepping up their pursuit once more as they look to beat their Premier League rivals to the signing of Todibo ahead of the January transfer window opening.

Romano tweeted: “Understand Tottenham have now opened talks to sign Jean Clair Todibo in January. He’s high on Tottenham list, not easy deal with OGC Nice — but talks now starting. Spurs spoke also to player’s camp in the recent days. Todibo remains also on Man United list since June.”

This is very exciting news, but it’s not over yet. We have to hope that Spurs are serious about this one and can get the signing arranged for the very first few days of the transfer window, as that would really help to balance the squad and settle any concerns going forward. What we don’t want to do is be panic-buying late in the window.
