Fabrizio Romano confirms Spurs have been watching striker since last year

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham’s scouts have been watching Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez for a long time.

The speculation linking Gimenez with a move away from De Kuip has intensified over the last couple of weeks as the striker continues his prolific start to the season, with Tottenham mooted as one of the player’s potential destinations in January.

In fact, earlier this week, TV Play (via Sport Witness) suggested that the 22-year-old is likely to be England-bound in January, with the Feyenoord man alleged to have received ‘great interest’ from Tottenham.

The publication added that Ange Postecoglou’s side are following Gimenez with ‘great attention’ and are ‘willing to accommodate’ him in their squad.

Meanwhile, agent Morris Pagniello, who is a consultant of Santiago Gimenez and his father (who represents the striker), told TuttoMercatoWeb on Thursday that Spurs and Real Madrid are leading the race for the striker’s signature.

Tottenham are looking at Santiago Gimenez

Romano has now provided an update on Tottenham’s interest in Gimenez, stating that the Mexican international would be available for around £39m.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “We know very well that many top clubs around Europe are keeping an eye on the boy. From what I’m hearing, something around €45m (£39m) could be the right fee to make it happen.

“Let’s see if (it’s) in the January window or in the summer window it depends on Feyenoord, more than on the player. The interest of many clubs is there.

“I think we saw Tottenham linked, because from what I’m told, Tottenham scouts have been following the player already last year. While they were following the manager (Slot) they saw that Santi Gimenez is absolutely a very good striker.

“So Santi Gimenez for sure is a player interesting for Tottenham, but also for many other clubs around Europe, and this is why decisions will be made in the next months. But at the moment, no statement from people close to the player and the only person (handling his transfer business) is the father.”

In an ideal world, Tottenham will want to wait until next summer before making a decision on Richarlison’s future and their centre-forward situation.

However, if Spurs feel that they would be risking losing out on Gimenez by waiting, we could see them make a move for the Feyenoord star in January.
