Fabrizio Romano confirms Spurs have not held talks with rumoured target

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that neither Tottenham nor any other Premier League club have held talks with Udinese over Rodrigo Becao.

Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Antonio Conte is keen on strengthening in central defence when the transfer window opens in January (CMW.it).

Tutto Udinese revealed a few days ago that Becao, whose current contract at the Dacia Arena runs until 2024, is one of the names on the North London club’s radar.

The report asserted that the Brazilian has refused to accept the new contract proposed by Udinese as he was not happy with the salary he was being offered.

It was suggested that Spurs, Arsenal and Everton were all monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation closely, with all three clubs allegedly willing to pay €15m (£13m) for the defender.

However, Romano has now revealed that Everton’s interest in Becao has now cooled while neither North London clubs have initiated talks with Udinese for the centre-back.

The journalist told Caught Offside: “Everton were interested in signing Udinese defender Rodrigo Becao during the summer. But (the Toffees) have since cooled their interest.

“There are no talks ongoing now between Udinese and any other club. Despite what you might be hearing elsewhere, there are currently no talks with Arsenal or Tottenham.

“What I can tell you is that he was an option for Everton last summer, but it’s gone quiet now. There are no talks ongoing with Udinese.”

This seems very much like a case of Becao’s representatives feeding the speculation to the press in order to put pressure on Udinese to meet the player’s salary demands. While Spurs are likely to be after a right-sided centre-back in January, they would be aiming for a higher calibre of player than the Udinese star.
