Fabrizio Romano does not expect reported Spurs target to move in January

Fabrizio Romano has said that he expects rumoured Tottenham target Emiliano Martinez to stay put at Aston Villa despite the growing speculation over the goalkeeper’s future.

Martinez wrote his name into the history books on Sunday by being the star of the World Cup Final penalty shootout and helping Argentina to clinch the trophy for the first time in 36 years.

Since the events in Qatar, there has been a lot written about the goalkeeper’s future, with a move to Tottenham being mooted as a possibility.

Journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport a few days ago that Spurs are eyeing the Villa number one as a potential successor to Hugo Lloris, and that the North London club are exploring whether the former Arsenal man would be open to a move next summer.

Martinez’s agent, Gustavo Goni, poured more fuel into the fire by telling Tuttomercatoweb on Monday that his client harbours ambitions of playing in the Champions League.

However, Romano has now played down the possibility of the goalkeeper leaving Villa Park.

The journalist said on the House of Champions Podcast about the Argentine international: “I don’t see him moving in January because the goalkeeper market is very particular.

“It is very different. Look at Livakovic for example, he has been fantastic for Croatia, but there is nothing ongoing because that market is different. All top clubs have a goalkeeper right now.

“The real priority for Emi Martinez at the moment is to focus on Aston Villa, there is a new manager, they have a project for the future and they want Martinez to be a part of that project.”

Villa’s owners have shown ambition over the last couple of years and I doubt they would let Martinez leave on the cheap next summer, given that he is contracted to the club until 2027 (Transfermarkt). So, Spurs will likely have to look elsewhere for a Lloris replacement, with Pickford being the obvious alternative.
