Fabrizio Romano explains what he knows about Spurs and Riccardo Calafiori

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tottenham are one of several European clubs keeping a keen eye on Riccardo Calafiori but the journalist insisted that Bologna will not let the centre-back leave before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

Radu Dragusin’s arrival from Genoa earlier this month has strengthened Spurs’ backline, with the Romanian now battling with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for a place in the club’s starting eleven.

While the Lilywhites allowed Eric Dier to leave the club and also loaned out Ashley Phillips, Ange Postecoglou has enough good options at his disposal, with Ben Davies also proving that he is more than capable of filling in at central defence if required.

However, Tottenham have continued to be linked with various centre-backs, one of them being Calafiori, who has excelled since his switch to Bologna last summer.

Earlier this month, Il Resto Del Carlino (via Tutto Bologna Web) claimed that Spurs were keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old, with the Premier League side even alleged to have asked about the player’s availability.

January move is not on the cards for Riccardo Calafiori

Romano has now said that Spurs are far from the only club around Europe who are monitoring the progress of Calafiori at Bologna.

However, the journalist asserted that the Serie A side will not sell the player during the current transfer window while also adding that Postecoglou is happy with his options at centre-back for the time being.

When asked about the speculation linking Calafiori to Spurs, Romano told GiveMeSport: “There are many Tottenham links to centre-backs, but at the moment, I’m honestly unaware of anything imminent. I think they’re pleased with Dragusin.

“Van de Ven is back, and Romero is in good condition. I don’t think they are looking for something imminent in that position. If there’s an opportunity, we know Tottenham are always ready, but I’m unaware of anything imminent.

“Calafiori is not leaving Bologna in the winter transfer window for sure. He’s a player being scouted by many European clubs and is doing fantastic at Bologna this season. But it’s not something that is happening right now.”

With Fabio Partici still working as a consultant at Tottenham, it does not come as a surprise that the club are continuing to keep tabs on the best-emerging talents in Serie A, particularly given the success that they have had over recent years with new recruits from Italy.

If Calafiori continues impressing over the next five months, there is a strong possibility that Spurs will knock on Bologna’s door for the Italy Under-21 international next summer.
