Fabrizio Romano explains what Tottenham must do to keep Conte this summer

Fabrizio Romano has explained that Antonio Conte will stay at Tottenham providing the club demonstrates a desire to win by giving him financial backing in this summer’s transfer window.

Conte has been experiencing his toughest spell at the Spurs helm with his side in dismal form, losing five of their last seven games in all competitions.

His future in North London appeared unclear last week after a drab defeat to Burnley, in which he questioned whether he was good enough to turn the club’s fortunes around (Daily Mail).

Things seemingly eased when Tottenham blitzed Leeds United 4-0 at the weekend, but the Lilywhites’ campaign took another hit when they crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Conte’s future, Italian journalist Romano has eased fears and says he will stay at Spurs beyond the summer providing the club shows enough ambition to convince him.

He told the Here We Go Podcast (01/03/22): “First of all, we know Antonio, after the Burnley game I saw many English fans and journalists saying that he will resign and leave the club, I understand that approach, this is normal football, but as Italians, we know how Antonio works.

“These are messages to the board, not to the players. I am told that Antonio is happy with the players and their approach, he’s not blaming the players. He wants the board to react, to plan the future now in February, March and April, not in August.

“He is happy with Tottenham life, but he wants the team to improve and sign new players, that’s why he’s sending messages now.

“Conte will stay at Tottenham if they will confirm to him that they will build him something important and sign important players, showing a winning mentality, not only on the pitch, but in the market as well.”

Conte has been frustrated recently, but that shows he cares about wanting to improve things at Tottenham. After this season he’ll have a year remaining on his contract, so it is imperative that the club demonstrates a want to succeed under him.
