Fabrizio Romano has doubts over whether Spurs will sign 28-year-old this summer

Fabrizio Romano has expressed doubts over whether Timo Werner will be a Tottenham Hotspur player by the start of next season.

While some eyebrows were raised when Tottenham signed Werner on loan in January, the forward did prove a useful addition for Ange Postecoglou’s men, chipping in with key contributions in the final third.

His season ended prematurely when he picked up an injury in the North London Derby and it is unclear what the future holds for the German international.

It was reported by Bild earlier this week that Spurs have not informed RB Leipzig if they plan on activating the €17m (£14.5m) option to buy him permanently, with the clause being active until June 14.

Spurs may choose against signing Timo Werner

However, the report made it clear that Werner was pretty comfortable at North London and wants to make the move, with the outlet also adding that the player’s time at the Red Bull Arena is expected to come to an end regardless of whether Tottenham activate the option.

Romano has now told JD Football that Ange Postecoglou and the Tottenham hierarchy have not yet made a final decision on whether to sign Werner.

The Italian journalist added that he has his doubts over whether the Lilywhites will secure the former Chelsea man’s services this summer.

I would be quite surprised if Tottenham have not yet made a decision yet. Werner would have been discussed in Postecoglou’s meeting with the recruitment department.

Based on Ange’s words in Melbourne earlier this week, it sounds like Spurs would be open to signing him under the right conditions, with the Premier League side perhaps seeking a discount on the £15m.
