Fabrizio Romano provides Spurs update on Villarreal wanting to keep Lo Celso

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Villarreal plan to open talks with Tottenham about keeping Giovani Lo Celso at the club next season.

Lo Celso joined the Yellow Submarine on loan for the rest of the season in January after struggling to break into Antonio Conte’s set-up in North London.

But despite failing to record a single goal or assist as of yet, he has still managed to impress on his stint under Unai Emery so far.

The Argentina international starred as Villarreal secured a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

And the display, which earned him the tie’s Man of the Match award, has now led to the club pursuing a deal to keep him around for a while longer.

Romano reports that Villarreal are ‘more than happy’ with Lo Celso and intend on opening talks with Tottenham about keeping him in Spain for the following campaign.

The club does not have a purchase option for the 25-year-old midfielder, meaning he would have to return to parent club Spurs upon the conclusion of the current season.

Lo Celso seems to be entering a strong patch of form with Villarreal, despite the lack of goals or assists as an attacking midfielder.

If Spurs do not see his future at the club, then they won’t have too many problems sorting him another deal next season. But it will be a case of wanting to find a permanent one as opposed to a loan.
