Fabrizio Romano provides update on Bastoni contract situation amid Spurs links

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter Milan are set to open talks with their defender Alessandro Bastoni amid reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 23-year-old joined Inter back in 2017 and has spent his entire career in his native Italy. Bastoni has amassed 140 appearances for Inter now (Transfermarkt) and has become one of the most exciting young centre-halves in world football.

It’s no surprise then that Tottenham Hotspur were linked with Bastoni throughout last summer, with the player thought to be one of Antonio Conte’s top targets (Football.London).

It was made clear at the time that the player would rather stay with Inter (Football Italia), so Spurs opted to sign Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan instead.

Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas suggested to the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel that Tottenham will attempt to sign Bastoni again at the end of this season. However, the player himself told the Inter matchday programme (via Sempre Inter) that he sees himself staying in Milan for ‘many years’.

If hopes of making a move for Bastoni in the near future were low, they may well be all but over now. The Italian is out of contract in 2024 (Transfermarkt), but the club are keen to extend that.

The latest update from Romano is: “Inter will extend Matteo Darmian’s deal for one more year — and talks will take place with Hakan Çalhanoglu and then Alessandro Bastoni to offer them new contract.”

It remains to be seen whether Bastoni would commit to a new deal, but if he does, the chances of him leaving Inter would surely be next to impossible.

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it’s very clear that Bastoni does not want to leave Inter Milan and is very, very comfortable in Italy. He’s a young lad, so there’s still time for him to think about a move in the future, but I really doubt he will ever leave.
