Fabrizio Romano provides update on race for Spurs-linked Manuel Ugarte

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte and claims the Uruguayan is wanted by three Premier League clubs.

Ugarte has been with Lisbon since the summer of 2021 and has developed into one of the finest young midfielders in Europe.

The 22-year-old has impressed many across 46 appearances in all competitions this season (Transfermarkt), including some top performances in the Champions League and Europa League.

His time in Portugal looks set to come to an end, however, as multiple clubs have been linked with the young star. Spurs are among the reported admirers for Ugarte, as reported by O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness).

Liverpool are also thought to be circling the player and a report from Record claimed the Reds had become the frontrunner in the race for his signature.

Journalist Neil Jones thinks otherwise, though, suggesting Jurgen Klopp has no intention of moving for Ugarte.

Now, Romano has a new update on the status of the coveted central midfielder, as he shared on his Twitter page that the player looks set for a summer move with a fee of €60 million potentially required to prise him away from Portugal.

He said: “Jorge Mendes is taking care of Manuel Ugarte’s future.

“Talks will continue with Premier League clubs ahead of summer move, very concrete possibility.

“There’s interest from three Premier League clubs but no agreement with any team yet.

“The race is open. Release clause: €60m.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Manuel Ugarte is a brilliant talent and could forge a perfect partnership with his compatriot Rodrigo Bentancur in the Spurs midfield.

There will be competition for his signature, but we seem to have a decent relationship with Sporting Lisbon which could hopefully give us the advantage. His fee is high, but it’s a fair price to pay for such a promising young player.
