Fabrizio Romano has revealed Barcelona are ‘optimistic’ that rumoured Tottenham target Ousmane Dembele will sign a contract extension.
Dembele’s current deal at the Camp Nou runs out in the summer and it was previously reported that Spurs were one of the clubs showing interest in snapping up the winger in the January transfer window.
Mundo Deportivo claimed last week that Barca were having difficulties in their attempts to tie the winger down to a new deal.
The report stated that a new contract seemed ‘difficult to materialise’, with the Catalan club finding the French international’s agent to be ‘elusive’ in negotiations.
Romano has now revealed that Newcastle have also entered the race for Dembele, having opened talks with his representatives a week ago.
However, the journalist suggested that Barcelona boss Xavi is ‘pushing’ to keep hold of the 24-year-old.
Romano added that the La Liga giants are now ‘confident’ they can reach a final agreement with the former Borussia Dortmund man in the coming days.

Spurs Web Opinion
I certainly was not on the Dembele hype train as some Spurs fans on social media seem to be. While the 24-year-old’s talent has never been in question, I have my doubts over whether his personality will be a right fit for Conte given how demanding the Italian is of his players.
