Fabrizio Romano reassures Spurs fans over player’s future

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reassured Tottenham fans that Sergio Reguilon is unlikely to return to Real Madrid at the end of the season since the left-back is happy in North London.

Tottenham secured Reguilon for a fee of £28m, with Real Madrid inserting a buy-back clause in the contract that would allow them to re-sign him for around £43m until the summer of 2022 (Football.London).

The left-back has made a fantastic start to his Spurs career, establishing himself as a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s side.

There have been reports from Spain suggesting that Real Madrid are looking at activating the buy-back clause at the end of the current season (El Chiringuito via Sport Witness).

The 23-year-old has hinted that he would open to returning to the Santiago Bernabeau in the future, having come through the youth ranks in the Spanish capital (El Larguero via ESPN FC’s Alex Kirkland).

However, Romano has now claimed that the Spanish international has settled in well in his new surroundings and is unlikely to ask to return to Madrid even if Los Blancos meet his release clause.

The journalist said on a recent episode of the Here We Go podcast: “There a still people who say Real Madrid will buy Reguilon next summer.

“Finally the decision is up to the player and he is totally focused on Tottenham.

“He is so happy with the Tottenham atmosphere. Don’t worry Tottenham fans.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Reguilon certainly seems to be enjoying his football and it is clear to see that he has already built a great rapport with his new teammates. However, he is a boyhood Real Madrid fan and so it would naive to just assume he will turn down a potential return to the Spanish capital.

However, what should fill Spurs fans with optimism is the fact that Ferland Mendy looks like he is going to be Madrid’s starting left-back for many years. Reguilon certainly would not want to go back to Madrid to play second fiddle to Mendy. Additionally, Zidane does not look like he is going anywhere at the moment and the Frenchman does not appear to rate Reguilon.
