Fabrizio Romano reveals club held ‘secret talks’ about signing Tottenham star in January

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Real Sociedad held ‘secret talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential deal for Bryan Gil during last month’s transfer window.

Gil was heavily linked with loan switches to the likes of Brighton (Daily Mail) and Lazio (Daniele Trecca) but the winger ended up staying put in North London.

When asked about the 22-year-old’s decision to stay, Ange Postecoglou said last week that it is not his role to “push people out” and insisted that he is happy with how hard the Spaniard is working in training (Football.London).

On Saturday, Football Insider claimed that the former Sevilla man had turned down several offers during the January window and asserted that Postecoglou plans on handing him regular game time over the coming months.

Romano has taken to social media to reveal that apart from the aforementioned clubs, Sociedad also explored the loan signing of Gil, holding ‘secret talks’ with Spurs.

However, the journalist explained that the La Liga side was not able to fulfil the conditions that Tottenham demanded for the deal.

Romano added that Gil also turned down proposals from both Brighton and Feyenoord during the last few days of the window to remain at Hotspur Way.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is not surprising to hear that a whole host of clubs were interested in signing Gil on loan but it sounds like the player was determined to remain at Tottenham as he feels he can force himself into Postecoglou’s plans.

However, I cannot help but think that he will struggle to do so, particularly now that Spurs are out of the cup competitions. Once Son returns from the Asian Cup and Solomon and Lo Celso return to fitness, the 22-year-old will find it difficult to get any game time.
