Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Eddie Howe is a big fan of Allan Saint-Maximin and wants the winger to remain at Newcastle United despite interest from Tottenham.
The Daily Mail reported two weeks ago that Saint-Maximin is one of the names Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte discussed during their talks about this summer’s transfer targets.
However, the report added that getting the French winger out of St James’ Park will ‘prove difficult’ for the North London club.
The Athletic subsequently revealed last week that it would take an offer in excess of £40m for the Magpies to consider selling the 25-year-old this summer, with the report adding that there is no expectation that such a bid will arrive.
Romano has now explained that while Spurs do hold an interest in Saint-Maximin, he is not seen by the club as a priority target this summer.
The journalist also revealed that Newcastle see the former Nice man as being an important part of the club’s project.
Romano told CaughtOffside: “Eddie Howe is a big fan of Allan Saint-Maximin and wants him to continue as a key player for next season.
So far, Tottenham have other priorities after the Ivan Perisic deal was completed. The club has always monitored Saint-Maximin, but let’s see if they will open negotiations with Newcastle.
“Of course, in my opinion, Saint-Maximin is an underestimated player: he can absolutely be part of a club that is fighting for the top positions, but he must feel important in a project and not just an alternative.
“For now, it could be wise for him to stay at Newcastle, where he will be an important part of an exciting project.”

Spurs will likely be in the market for a forward to replace Steven Bergwijn this summer. However, rather than an out-and-out winger like Saint-Maximin or an out-and-out centre-forward like a Darwin Nunez, I expect the club to go after a versatile forward like Richarlison who can play across the front three.
