Fabrizio Romano has revealed that those at Tottenham Hotspur are convinced Cristian Romero will be a major asset for the side in the future.

Romero’s career has taken off considerably over the last 12 months, with the 23-year-old having a stellar campaign at Atalanta last season and also establishing himself as a mainstay in Argentina’s backline.

That convinced Tottenham to strike a deal for the central defender over the summer, with the North Londoners signing him on an initial season-long loan deal with an option to buy him permanently for £42.5m.

After a tricky start to his Spurs career, Romero has put in some solid displays for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men over the last few weeks.

The Argentine’s partnership with Eric Dier has looked quite promising and Spurs fans will be hoping it proves to be the answer to the defensive issues that have plagued the side of late.

Romano has revealed that Spurs are excited by what they have seen of Romero so far this season.

The Italian said on the Here We Go podcast (19/20/21): “Talking Tottenham, I just want to say about Nuno, they are going along with him of course.

“And the situation of Cuti Romero, in Tottenham, they are really thinking they signed a top centre-back, they wanted him strongly, they had the chance to sign Tomiyasu, signing Milenkovic, signing Zouma.

“They wanted Romero, Paratici wanted him and he’s performing well also with Argentina. In Tottenham, they are convinced they have a centre-back for the present and the future, so they are really excited with this signing.”

Central defenders coming into the Premier League usually take a season to get used to the style of football. That would especially hold true for a defender like Romero, who takes more risks and tries to intercept the ball rather than dropping off.

So, even if the 23-year-old makes a couple of mistakes this season, fans should not get on his back. He and Dier seem to compliment each other well at the back, and while it is still early days, the partnership is showing signs of being a really solid one.
