Fabrizio Romano has insisted that Cristian Romero remains Tottenham Hotspur’s number one central defensive target.
The journalist revealed that Spurs are still in negotiations with Atalanta, but the two clubs are yet to agree a €55m (£46.9m) fee.
Romano claimed that should the North Londoners fail to secure the services of Romero, they will open talks with three alternative targets who equate to a similar combined value.
Spurs could turn their attentions to Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu (€18m/£15.3m), Nikola Milenkovic of Fiorentina (€15m/£12.8m) and Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma (€25m/£21.3m).
Football.London also claimed last week that Spurs are in advanced talks with Atalanta, and have also spoken with Sevilla about Jules Kounde.
Tottenham still in negotiation for Cristian Romero but no agreement yet on €55m fee – he’s the priority. 100%. ⚪️ #THFC
Plan B: open talks to sign 3 different defenders with same amount. Tomiyasu [€18m], Milenkovic [€15m] and Zouma [€25m].
Caleta-Car, NOT even an option.

Whether Toby Alderweireld will complete his £13m move to Al-Duhail could help set the wheels in motion to part-fund the move for Romero.
There is no doubt that the Argentine is the outstanding candidate to help transform our backline.
Whether Chelsea would be prepared to do business with Spurs for Zouma is questionable given the frosty history between the two rivals since the Luka Modric saga.
