Fabrizio Romano reveals Spurs staff are ‘happy’ with player’s progress

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Yves Bissouma is working hard behind the scenes to impress Antonio Conte and his coaching staff.

When Tottenham signed Bissouma from Brighton in £25m deal over the summer, Spurs fans would have been forgiven for expecting him to walk into the starting lineup, given how well he had done for the Seagulls over the last couple of years.

However, the 25-year-old has struggled to break into the North London club’s starting eleven, with Conte continuing to show faith in the partnership of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, who have both been in exceptional form.

Bissouma was handed just his second start for Spurs against his former club on Saturday as Conte shifted to a 3-5-2, and the midfielder put in a solid display to help the Lilywhites come away with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Romano has now advised Spurs fans not to be concerned with Bissouma’s lack of game time and insisted that the coaching staff at Tottenham are happy with the midfielder’s progress.

The journalist said on his email newsletter – 7:25 am, October 9, 2022: “The truth is, Bissouma was probably not 100% ready for Conte’s ideas, but I’m told the player is working hard to improve and the staff are happy with his progress. It’s still early days, so Spurs fans should be patient and judge him over the course of the season.”

Playing as part of the midfield two is arguably the hardest position in Conte’s system, given that the defensive positioning has to be perfect and you have to pick the right moments to press and to make forays forward. Perhaps it is just a case of Bissouma needing a bit more time to get used to the demands of the role.
