Fabrizio Romano reveals Spurs tried to sign 21-year-old centre-back in January

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham failed with an attempt to sign Lille centre-back Sven Botman during the January transfer window.

Botman has established himself as a fixture in Lille’s starting eleven after his move from Ajax in the summer and has been one of the best young defenders in Ligue 1 this season.

Duncan Castles revealed in The Transfer Window Podcast (as relayed by The Express) last month that Tottenham were interested in the Dutch defender, with Jose Mourinho viewing the youngster as the perfect solution for his issues on the left side of central defence.

Tottenham ended the transfer window empty-handed but it was reported during Lille’s clash against Brest on Sunday (Canal + Sport via RMC Sport) that Lille had agreed to sell the 21-year-old to an English club at the end of the season.

Romano has now revealed on social media that Botman’s agent Nikkie Bruinenberg has stated that no such agreement is in place.

The Italian journalist also claimed that Spurs and Liverpool tried in vain to sign the centre-back last month.

It looks like Luis Campos has pulled off another gem out of nowhere in Botman. The youngster looks to have all the qualities needed to become a top central defender. However, like our decision to sign Davinson Sanches in 2017, signing the Dutchman would entail risk as he has only had one good season at the top level.
