Fabrizio Romano reveals Spurs were unhappy with 26-year-old’s snub in January

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were not pleased with the way in which Adama Traore snubbed their approach in January, adding that the pacy wide-man is no longer a priority for the North London club.

Antonio Conte reportedly wanted to sign Traore in January and convert him into a right wing-back but the pacy wide-man turned down Spurs’ approach in favour of a loan move to Barcelona (The Athletic).

The winger struggled to get much game time at Camp Nou and is expected to return to Wolves this summer after Barcelona chose not to take up the option to buy the 26-year-old permanently (90 min).

Some publications have suggested that Spurs could reignite their interest in Traore this summer (CalcioMercato) but over recent days, Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence has emerged as the Lilywhites’ top target for the right wing-back role (Football.London).

Romano has now said that while Traore remains on Tottenham’s radar, the Wolves man has to go out of his way to show that he actually wants to join the club after his antics in January.

When asked about Spurs’ interest in the Spaniard, the journalist said on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube Channel (7:20): “I’m sure he’s a name they have on the list. But at the moment, he’s not the real priority.

“I’m told Tottenham were not super happy with what happened in January when they were really close to signing him and then he really wanted to join Barcelona.

“I think Adama has to show that he really wants to join Tottenham if he wants this opportunity again.”

Some reports have suggested that Spurs might cash in on both Doherty and Emerson this summer and start the campaign with two new right wing-backs (The Daily Express).

So, Spurs moving for Spence might not completely rule out an approach for Traore. However, it does seem like the 26-year-old was only a target for Conte in January due to the lack of options available during that window.
