Fabrizio Romano reveals two clubs have ‘left the race’ for Spurs-linked defender

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Ajax are making progress in their negotiations to sign AZ Alkmaar left-back Owen Wijndal, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

Tottenham have already strengthened at left wing-back this summer by snapping up Ivan Perisic on a free transfer, with the Croat expected to compete with Ryan Sessegnon for a place in the starting eleven next season (Football.London).

Foot Mercato reported earlier this month that Spurs also have their eye on another left-back in the form of Wijndal, with the report suggesting that the North London club had begun talks with Alkmaar over a deal for the player.

The 22-year-old has evolved into one of the stand-out wing-backs in the Eredivisie over the last three years and finished the 2021/22 campaign with 10 assists in 31 league appearances (Transfermarkt).

The Netherlands international admitted last week that he is ready to take a step up from Alkmaar this summer (ESPN Netherlands).

Romano has now taken to social media to reveal that two unnamed clubs have withdrawn from the race for Wijndal, thus clearing the path for Ajax to sign the youngster.

If Spurs did express an interest in Wijndal, they would have likely done so before the transfer window opened. Once Perisic came through the door, any interest in the Netherlands international would have likely ended as Conte evidently rates Sessegnon highly.
