Fabrizio Romano reveals what he has heard about Frenkie de Jong amid Tottenham rumours

Fabrizio Romano has reacted to the rumours linking Frenkie de Jong with a move to Tottenham, revealing that Barcelona will try to extend the midfielder’s contract over the coming months.

On Wednesday morning, many Spurs fans would have woken up to quite sensational news from Jijantes FC, who revealed that Tottenham had informed Barca they would be willing to pay €60m (£51.3) for De Jong.

Even more unbelievable, the outlet suggested that the Lilywhites were willing to nearly match the Dutchman’s current salary to convince him to make a move.

However, this update was quickly quashed by Alasdair Gold, who insisted that no such proposal had been sent by Spurs for De Jong.

On Thursday, Sport explained that Barca are expected to ask the Netherlands international to substantially reduce his salary and if he declines, they might put him on the shop window.

Romano sets the record straight on Frenkie de Jong

Romano has now shed light on what he has heard about De Jong’s future amidst the speculation linking him with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The journalist explained that Barca still very much believe in the 26-year-old and would make an attempt to tie him down to a new deal.

Romano told CaughtOffside: “There have been lots of rumours about Frenkie de Jong lately guys, but I can tell you that Barcelona will try to extend his contract in the next months. They still believe in Frenkie and there’s no news on the player side so far regarding wanting to leave the club.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if De Jong refuses to accept a new deal on reduced terms with Barca and is put on the shop window, I do not see him as being a realistic target for Tottenham, who would have to shatter their wage structure to sign the former Ajax man.
