Fabrizio Romano says club want to sign injured Spurs player in January

According to Fabrizio Romano, Croatian side Hajduk Split are trying ‘their best’ to sign Ivan Perisic from Tottenham Hotspur this month, but the move all depends on whether the veteran can regain fitness before May of this year.

Perisic signed for Spurs on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 and enjoyed a fairly fruitful campaign under his former manager, Antonio Conte. Despite Tottenham’s struggles last season, the Croatian registered 12 assists in his debut season in English football (Transfermarkt).

The 34-year-old was rumoured to be leaving Spurs in the summer, but stuck around and made an impact in the early stages of Ange Postecoglou‘s tenure, putting up another two assists (Transfermarkt).

However, Perisic’s season, and indeed his Spurs career were cut short when he suffered an ACL injury in August 2023. Postecoglou admitted recently that Perisic is ‘unlikley to play’ for the club ever again (Football.London).

Perisic’s future looks likely to lie back in Croatia, with his former club Hajduk Split keen to be reunited with the player. The club’s manager, Mislav Karoglan even admitted he wants to add Perisic to his squad (Dalmatinski Portal).

Hajduk want Ivan Perisic this month

Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation, revealing that Hajduk Split are pushing to make the transfer happen this month. The only problem is, it all comes down to whether Perisic can regain his fitness before the end of the season.

Romano tweeted: “Hajduk Split are still dreaming of Ivan Perisić as top target. Understand they will try again their best to make the deal happen in January.

“Perisić recovery from ACL injury going well. A lot depends if doctors confirm that he’d be able to play before May 2024.”

If we can move Perisic on this month, it would free up a lot of money in wages and that could be very useful. He currently earns around £180,000 a week, and that’s money that could be better spent elsewhere.
