Fabrizio Romano says ‘Tottenham scouts are always attentive’ to one market

Fabrizio Romano has said that he is not surprised about the speculation linking Manuel Ugarte with a move to Tottenham as scouts from the North London club are attentive to the Portuguese market.

Spurs were first credited with an interest in Ugarte back in November (A Bola) on the back of their two Champions League group stage clashes against Sporting Lisbon.

Record (07/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) even suggested earlier this month that the Lilywhites had ‘prioritised’ a move for the Uruguayan this summer.

The report added that the Premier League club have ‘promised to move forward with an official proposal’ for Ugarte, who is said to have a release clause of €60m (£53.1m) in his contract.

It was explained that Sporting are open to cashing in on the midfielder since they need to raise funds before making any new signings this summer.

Romano has now suggested that we might see Spurs being linked with more players from the Portuguese top flight ahead of the summer.

When asked about the speculation linking Ugarte with a move to Tottenham, the journalist told CaughtOffside: “Manuel Ugarte has been linked again with Tottenham – these links are always there.

“I think it’s one or two years of Ugarte and Spurs links because Tottenham scouts are always attentive to the Portuguese market, as with the Pedro Porro deal.”

We know that Tottenham’s scouts made several trips to Portugal recently to run the rule over Porro ahead of January.

It is quite possible that a couple of other players, including Ugarte, would have caught their eye.

That might also explain the club’s reported interest in Pedro Goncalves.
