Fabrizio Romano has revealed that talks over a contract extension between Tottenham and Antonio Conte never reached an advanced stage.
Following Tottenham’s elimination from the Champions League on Wednesday, multiple outlets have reported that the Lilywhites have begun their search for Conte’s replacement.
The Daily Mail claimed on Thursday that the Tottenham hierarchy have no immediate plans to sack the 53-year-old as Daniel Levy does not want to do anything that will hamper the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
However, it was explained that the Spurs chairman will be forced to act before the end of the season if he feels that their top-four pursuit is jeopardised by Conte remaining at the club.
Romano took to social media to confirm that talks between the Italian and North London club over a new contract never really took off.
The journalist added that Conte leaving the club is now a ‘concrete possibility’ and suggested that the Tottenham head coach’s personal/family situation will be a key point in the outcome.

It is fair to say that the prospect of Conte leaving has long moved past being a ‘concrete possibility’ and is now a near certainty.
I would be extremely surprised if the Italian remained at the club until the end of the season as I expect the club’s hierarchy to pull the plug on the project on the back of our next defeat.
