‘Fans need to give him a break’ – Pundit defends Spurs midfielder

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has mounted a passionate defence of Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli.

The England international has come for heavy criticism recently due to the drop in his performance levels.

While Alli was sensational during his first two seasons at Tottenham, his impact has dropped off considerably since. The 23-year-old has also picked up several injuries over the calendar year which has meant that he has found it difficult to build momentum.

Although he has now recovered fully from his injury and has won his place back in the Spurs side, the midfielder has lost his place in the England set up with Gareth Southgate preferring the likes of James Maddison and Mason Mount ahead of the Tottenham man.

Mills, however, has opined that Alli’s drop in form is natural given the injury problems he’s had recently.

Speaking to Football Insider, the pundit said, “Alli has to expect with everything going on in his personal life and everything else going on around him and injuries as well – he hasn’t been 100 per cent fit for some time – he’s going to have a dip in form.

“You’ve got to be a little bit patient with Dele Alli, he’s undoubtedly a fantastic talent, a very, very good player but all those reasons; injury, personal issues, the team not playing particularly well – fans need to give him a break.”

The former England defender backed Alli to get back to his best once is able to play consistently.

He added, “He just needs to get back to that consistency of playing week in, week out and get that fitness level back to 100 per cent.”

I have actually been impressed with Dele’s displays in his last few outings as there are signs that he is returning back to his best. I have no doubt that he will get back to the form he displayed a couple of years ago should he stay free of injury and will be on the plane for the Euros next summer.
