Ferdinand claims Conte will walk out of Spurs if two conditions are not met

Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Antonio Conte will leave Tottenham unless the club back him in the summer transfer window and the attitude of the Spurs squad changes.

As one has come to expect from Conte over the course of his managerial career, he has been not been shy of voicing his feelings publicly in his fourth months in charge in North London.

The Italian put his future at Tottenham in doubt after the club’s loss to Burnley last week, hinting that he might not be the man to turn around the club’s fortunes (Football.London).

Conte was a lot more measured in his assessment of Spurs’ loss to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Tuesday, insisting that the team has to learn from the mistakes and improve their mentality (Football.London).

Ferdinand believes the 52-year-old will not be in charge of Tottenham next season unless he gets the signings he asks for and the players change their mindset.

The former Manchester United defender said on his YouTube channel Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE: “I’ve said before the game that based on the interview and the inconsistencies at Spurs, if they don’t guarantee him big funds in the summer and he doesn’t see a change in the attitude of the players and their character that matches his, he will go.

“He won’t take one of the other, he needs both of those things to stay, and if he doesn’t get the both of those things, the money and the will to win and consistency with this team, he’ll say ‘this isn’t for me’ and I think he’ll be unapologetic about that.”

I think questioning the players’ ‘attitude’ is lazy analysis and is a cliche that pundits repeat without analysing the situation properly.

Conte has not voiced any issues with the players’ willingness to work hard. In fact, he has said that this squad of players is the best he has worked with in terms of their attitude (Evening Standard).

It also appears certain that the 52-year-old will be backed in the summer. He would not have accepted the Tottenham job without assurances regarding money to spend.
