FIFA give Dele the finger

Dele has been banned for one international match following his middle-finger gesture supposedly directed at ex Spurs teammate Kyle Walker during a recent World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.

He was also hit in the pocket too, being fined 5,000 Swiss francs (£3,852) by Fifa.

World football’s governing body said the incident on the  4th of September was “offensive and unsporting”.

England manager Gareth Southgate included the midfielder in his squad for the upcoming qualifiers but Alli will now miss Thursday’s match at home to Slovenia. The 21-year-old will be available for the game against Lithuania on the following Sunday.

Following the incident Alli took to social media to say his gesture was aimed at former Spurs team-mate Kyle Walker.

The incident occurred in the 77th minute of England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia when Alli appeared to be fouled by ex Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, but referee Clement Turpin waved play on.

Cameras caught the incident and it looked initially that Alli aimed his gesture at the officials, with whom he also had words when he was substituted in the 93rd minute.

A Fifa statement said: “Although the disciplinary committee was not convinced that the player directed the gesture at the referee, and regardless of whether it was allegedly directed at a team-mate, it did consider such gesture to be offensive and unsporting. Therefore it amounted to a violation of article 57 of the Fifa disciplinary code.”
