‘Fighting for something’ – Spurs midfielder explains why he’s staying at the club for now

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has confirmed once and for all that he is indeed staying with Tottenham Hotspur despite intense speculation surrounding his future, and the man himself has revealed how he feels about being a part of the squad right now.

Ever since the summer it has looked likely that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would leave Tottenham at some point in the near future, with the midfielder losing his status as a first-team regular with the Lilywhites.

It had been suggested that Hojbjerg was told he could look for a new club this month (Football Insider). And, there had seemingly been plenty of options if he did choose to leave, including Newcastle United (Chronicle), Lyon (Foot Mercato), Napoli, and Juventus (Kick).

However, the 28-year-old has found himself getting more minutes under Ange Postecoglou of late, and even played the full 90 minutes in the two games against Manchester United and Manchester City.

Then, on the 29th January, Florian Plettenberg shared comments by Hojbjerg’s lawyer where it was revealed the player had decided to ignore interest from elsewhere and stick with Spurs until the end of the season.

Hojbjerg wants to fight for Spurs

Now, the player himself has spoken out (via The Athletic), and has confirmed exactly why he has made the decision to stay at his current club.

Hojbjerg said: “I definitely feel I can help the team. The key is that we are playing for something. I always said in the past like I say now, what drives me is the purpose of fighting for something and I definitely feel that Tottenham is fighting for something.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m glad Hojbjerg is staying, at least for now. I think, eventually, we will need to upgrade and get a more dynamic midfielder in, but he really does offer a level of stability and control in midfield that our other players don’t, and he can be very valuable for this second half of the campaign.
