Finance expert argues that Daniel Levy deserves his six-figure pay rise at Spurs

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has said that Daniel Levy deserves his reported £500,000 pay rise, given how far Tottenham have come both on and off the pitch in the two decades since he became chairman.

The popularity of Levy and ENIC is seemingly at an all-time low among the Tottenham fan base, with some fans chanting for the owners to leave in some of the club’s recent matches (Football.London).

So, some Spurs fans would not have been impressed when The Telegraph reported two weeks ago that the chairman had handed himself a considerable pay rise.

The report reveals that Levy earned £3.265m this financial year in comparison to £2.698m the previous year.

Meanwhile, the total money pocketed by Tottenham’s directors, including managing director of Fabio Paratici and Todd chief commercial officer Todd Kline, has also gone up by almost £3m, with the total rising from £4m to £6.7m.

Maguire believes that Levy deserves credit for the fact that the North London club have now achieved financial parity with some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, given where they were a decade and a half ago.

When asked about Levy rewarding himself with a pay rise, Maguire told Football Insider: “If we go back 15 years, Tottenham were level with clubs such as Everton and Newcastle in terms of income generation and potential market position.

“What they have done is that they have pushed forwards both on and off the pitch. Daniel Levy does deserve an element of credit for this.

“It has also created frustration with fans that feel they should have been more aggressive in terms of investment in the playing squad and talent identification.

“But they have definitely got the infrastructure right at the club. Their only disappointment is not being able to match the excellent work off the pitch with the manager and players on the pitch.”

What Levy has achieved off the pitch is clear for all to see as the numbers speak for themselves. His achievements, from a pure business sense, is quite remarkable.

The gripe for most Spurs fans is the fact that we have not won a trophy in almost 15 years, which is too long for a club of our size.

However, it is worth remembering that we had many more opportunities to win major trophies over the last decade than we did in the two decades prior to that, and I do not think it is solely on the ownership that we managed to consistently bottle semifinals and finals.
