Finance expert predicts how much Spurs could spend this summer with or without CL

Dr Dan Plumley has claimed that Tottenham could spend up to £100 million on new players this summer regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League or not.

The race to finish in the Premier League top four is set to go down to the final day of the season, with Spurs currently holding the cards over rivals Arsenal.

Antonio Conte’s men boast a two-point advantage with a superior goal difference over the Gunners, who dropped the ball with defeat at Newcastle on Monday night.

The Italian coach, who has overseen a positive turnaround in North London, previously suggested Spurs needed hefty investment if they are to close the gap in quality and compete for the league title in the near future (The Athletic).

Club chairman Daniel Levy also hinted that he intends on pledging cash for acquisitions this summer, in a statement to Tottenham supporters last week.

While securing a Champions League berth would provide a lucrative source for spending, finance expert Plumley believes Spurs will open the chequebook even if they do not reach Europe’s top tier competition.

He told Football Insider: “They can spend under FFP. Financial performance has largely been good in recent years due to the way Levy has run the club like a business.

“But their revenue is still behind City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United. There’s a big gap there, both in the finances and on the pitch.

“We should stress that Champions League football would make a huge impact on spending. If they qualify, that could see them spend £100m to compete in that competition.

“If they don’t make it, there will also be a clamour for investment so they can make it next season. So you can see them spending that either way.”

Tottenham travel to relegated Norwich on the final day needing a point to qualify for the Champions League, barring a huge swing of goals in Arsenal’s fixture against Everton.

Levy should have realised by now that Conte is what Tottenham need currently and he needs the financial backing to keep showing what he is all about.

Reaching the Champions League would definitely help that, but even if they do not make it that should increase the need for spending to improve the team to get back there.
