‘Find it crazy’ – Paul Merson urges Man United to sign Tottenham player

Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to break the bank to sign Harry Kane, insisting that the Tottenham man can even take the Red Devils to the Champions League trophy.

Kane is on course to have his most productive season in front of goal, with the striker having found the back of the net 15 times in 18 Premier League games so far this season (Transfermarkt).

With the 29-year-old’s current contract having 18 months left to run, reports from Germany continue to link him with a move to Bayern Munich next summer (Bayern Insider Podcast via Fussball Nachrichten).

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs told The Football Terrace YouTube Channel last week that Tottenham remains hopeful of tying Kane to a new deal and explained that the North London club hope to convince the striker to commit his future by allowing him a say in future footballing decisions.

However, Merson believes that it is only a matter of time before the England captain leaves Spurs, and urged Erik Ten Hag’s men to snap him up if they harbour ambitions of catching Manchester City.

The former Arsenal midfielder wrote in his column for The Daily Star: “In an age where clubs spend money for fun and world-class centre-forwards are a rarity, I would find it crazy if Manchester United did not break the bank for Harry Kane.

“You can look all around the world, rack your brains and round up every scout within your network and the answer is right there in front of you. There is nobody that comes close to Kane that is currently available.

“If United ever want to catch Manchester City, they’ve got to go and get Kane. Everybody wants a striker and is searching far and wide but the best centre-forward is staring everybody in the face.

“He plays for a team in Tottenham that are going to win absolutely nothing and surely, sooner or later his head is going to be turned by a move again.

“I don’t know what I’m missing here. Even if he costs £ 150 million and it’s a four or five-year contract, you are buying over 100 goals. Who else is going to give you that?

“Everyone talks about Erling Haaland but for me, Kane could deliver similar numbers in that Manchester City team and even add more assists.

“Call me silly but Kane would even give United a chance of winning the Champions League in my opinion. He is a machine. Tottenham are only where they are because of Harry Kane, it really is that simple. He is the difference.”

If Kane leaves Spurs at this stage of his career, he would only do so to join a club that can guarantee silverware, which is why he was tempted b a move to Man City in the summer of 2021. Even though Man Utd seem to be on an upward trajectory under Erik Ten Hag, they would not offer the 29-year-old a similar guarantee of big trophies.
