‘Follow the same road’ – Mourinho urges his players to respond after Liverpool defeat

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he was pleased with his side’s performance at Anfield despite their 2-1 loss and insisted that Spurs will not abandon their principles despite the result.

Tottenham seemed the more likely to side to win the match in the second half with Steven Bergwijn and Harry Kane both missing chances that many would expect them to put away with ease.

The home side took home all three points in the dying moments of the game when Roberto Firmino escaped his marker from a corner kick and produced a thumping header that gave Hugo Lloris no chance.

The Spurs boss insisted that he was happy with the way his side approached the game despite the result.

He told Football.London: “Looking to the performance I’m happy with the team, happy with our proposal, the proposal of going into every match and looking to win it.

“Sometimes you can’t do it and sometimes you cannot play better than you did because of the opponent.”

Tottenham do not have much time to dwell on the result as they have a crucial game coming up against Leicester City on Sunday.

The Portuguese urged his players to respond against the Foxes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

When asked how difficult it will be to pick his players up after yesterday’s defeat, Mourinho said: “It’s just to follow the same road. It’s not because we win here tonight or we lose here tonight that we are going to leave that road.

“The road is the match after match, the road is to improve, the road is to prepare the future of this team better and better and better like other clubs do.

“Like other managers, they have to do, so we have a big game again on Sunday against one of the best teams, and we have to move on. And tomorrow we are there, and let’s go for Sunday again.”

The silver-lining with our defeat on Wednesday is the fact that we have a game coming up in just a couple of days time and we do not have to dwell on the result for a whole week. The clash against the Foxes has just taken up a lot more importance after the loss at Anfield. The players need to show that they can bounce back from yesterday’s result.
