‘For sure target’ – Conte gives immediate reaction to Tottenham’s CL draw

Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Antonio Conte has claimed that Group D in the Champions League is very balanced, but Spurs will be targeting qualification for the knockouts.

Spurs fans eagerly awaited their Champions League fate yesterday evening as the club’s very own youth coach, Yaya Toure, took charge of draw duties for UEFA.

The North Londoners were placed in Group D with Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting Lisbon, and Marseille, a rather favourable collection of teams considering the likes of Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich were available.

Although no side in the Champions League can be underestimated, Spurs will likely go into all six group stage matches as favourites. As such, many will have already earmarked the Lilywhites to top the group and make it through to the knockouts.

When asked about the Champions League draw, Conte admitted it was a very balanced group, but Spurs would be targeting the next round.

He said (Football London): “The draw our group I see balance in our group. For sure, the target to go to next round.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Reading between the lines, it appears Conte is saying that Frankfurth, Marseille, and Sporting are all similar levels of club – a level that Spurs should be beating to make it into the knockouts. Anything other than first place in this group will be disappointing.
