Former Arsenal defender expects Kane to lose out to Liverpool forward

The race for the Premier League golden boot this season is expected to be tighter than ever with several contenders already vying for the prize.

While Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki, Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling, Burnley’s Ashley Barnes and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham have come flying out of the blocks this season, the usual suspects including Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are favourites to win it.

Aubameyang and Salah shared the award with Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane last season with 22 goals (Standard).

The Daily Mail asked former Arsenal defender Martin Keown and former Blackburn forward Chis Sutton to predict their winners for this season.

Sutton picked Kane to take home with the award if he can stay injury free this season with the forward getting consistent game time for Spurs.

When asked to pick his winner, Sutton said, “Harry Kane. Fitness permitting, he will always be leading that line for Spurs.

“Sergio Aguero has come flying out of the blocks, but he may be rested for the odd game.

“Kane takes penalties, as we saw against Arsenal. He felt he should have been awarded a second one but come on Harry… that wasn’t worth a spot-kick.”

However, Keown backed Salah to pip the Tottenham forward if the Reds go on to win the title.

He said, “If Liverpool are going to be champions, it has to be Mohamed Salah.

“He will pip Sadio Mane this season, and I’m sure Klopp won’t have let those two leave Turf Moor on Saturday without dealing with their squabble.

“Salah went through a spell where he struggled to score last season, but I see more in his play this year than I have before.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is worth remembering that Harry Kane won the award on the last two occasions that he was fit for the whole season i.e the 15/16 as well as the 16/17 season.

If not for his ankle injuries over the last two seasons, his strike rate indicates that he would have been up there with the likes of Salah. I expect the Tottenham forward to win the award if he can stay fit this season.
